easy read, wonderful story Dec 14, 2009
I bought this book for my husband after we visited Alcatraz together. He really enjoyed Darwin's story. It is very easy to read and follow and Darwin's story is an inspiring tale of a young boy who could not stay out of trouble and finally ended up at Alcatraz prison. It is wonderful to read how Chuck Colson helped turn his life around and is now a productive citizen. Good for you Darwin! God Bless.
Very interesting story, but wish there was more. Oct 19, 2008
I purchased this 150 page book at a book signing my the auther, Darwin E. Coons. He's a quiet, reserved man, but he does a good job sharing his life story leading to his five-year imprisonment at Alcatraz. Not one of the most controversial inmates to have resided at The Rock, he did assist Frank Morris and the Angler brothers - the only three men to have ever escaped successfully from the island (made into a famous 1979 movie starring Clint Eastwood). His memoir provides a very detailed look into the childhood that shaped him into the armed bank robber he became. The editing of the book leaves something to be desired, but the convict-writing style of prisoner #1422 is as striking as the author's whiskey nose. I read it in one sitting; it's one of those rare books you just can't put down until you finish it. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in history, biography, and reference material.
Very real first person story Aug 09, 2008
Well I just got back from SF and of course toured the "Rock". I guess I thought I was unique in having Darwin sign my book, but in any case it was neat to meet a former inmate. The book isn't going to win any awards, but it's definitely a real story of an interesting guy, and I think it's cool that I met him.
Fascinating Read! Jul 29, 2008
I too met Darwin on a recent visit to Alcatraz. I didn't know what to say to him, and as another reviewer expressed, he truly is a man of few words.
I couldn't put the book down-- absolutely fascinating. I think it should be made into a movie. Too bad I don't write screenplays. :)
I totally enjoyed it! Jun 07, 2008
After visiting Alcatraz and meeting Mr. Coon at the book store where he was answering questions and signing copies of his book, I immediately came home to read his story. I couldn't put it down. It was so facsinating to read about his many brushes with the law but more importantly how his life began on this path of destruction. He obviously had a very rough childhood. His life was physically, mentally and emotionally destroyed from a very young age. I am amazed he has lived through the events he documents in the book. What a fascinating story. I highly recommend it!
